My thing right now is testing for pesticides and Nitrogenated and Chlorinated herbicides. Kansas does a good job at in-depth stream network monitoring, so I get samples from lakes, streams, creeks, rivers, and ponds all over the state. I also perform my tests on Public Water Samples, which is more stressful b/c of the nature of the beast: that's what people are drinking, bathing in, etc. We also test soil samples, fish tissue (which is fun b/c we get to put the fish through the meat grinder to start the extraction process), and any samples that are suspect for contamination. One of the other chemists tests for regular herbicides, one tests for halo-acetic acids, one tests for metals, etc. We all kind of do our own tests on the samples that we get. The main division I work in is Organic Chemistry (the metals testing and the like are in the Inorganic division).
It's a lot more interesting than it sounds, really. Since I've been here I've been able to re-write a method for my GCs, cutting the run time in half per sample inject while still getting proper chromatographic performance. Because I'm testing for a variety of different compounds, I don't use selective ion monitoring, and running the total spec is more interesting b/c you never know what you're going to find.
Anyway, where are you studying?
This is a beautiful picture!!!!! If I had a printer I'd print it, frame it, and put it in my portrait gallery.
Don't make me blush. (:
I'll print it and send it to you with your birthday present, if you like.
Did you see the ones of SF? Only 2 posted so far, but I'll get more up when I can get the Hub off of the computer at home.
That IS a beautiful pic!
I misses you.
John
Yes, please print it! I'd love that! Any size will do. If I can't find a frame to fit it, I'll get creative and cut a matte out from my extensive, patterned origami-paper collection.
I saw the picture of SF scenery, looks like it was taken from the top of Lombard, and of the abortion truck. BLECH.
